Advancing Democracy through South-South Cooperation
On June 19–20, 2025,
NAM CSSTC attended an invitation as one of the speakers at the High-Level Dialogue Re-imagining Democracy in Africa event held in Pretoria, South Africa. The dialogue is used to celebrate democratic achievements and reflect on the challenges of promoting democratic governance in Global South countries. As the host country, South Africa showcased its post-apartheid democratic transition and its role in promoting global multilateralism. The dialogue also served as a platform to commemorate the 30th anniversary of International IDEA.
The Director of NAM CSSTC had the opportunity to be a resource person in a panel session themed "Democracy and Development: Lessons from the Global South," a topic that is highly relevant and aligned with NAM CSSTC's mandate and programs aimed at promoting technical cooperation and sustainable development in Global South countries.
The panel was also attended by a number of experts from the Global South, including Dr. McBride Nkhlamba, Director for Governance and Specialized Reporting, African Peer Review Mechanism; Dr. Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian, Director of the Department of Social Inclusion, Organization of American States; Ambassador Diar Nurbintoro, Director of NAM CSSTC; and Dr. Sithembile Mbete, Executive Director, Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI).
Following the topic of the event, Ambassador Diar Nubrintoro discussed how South-South cooperation can serve as a platform for the exchange of best practices on public policy innovation and government digitalization. NAM CSSTC actively facilitates platforms such as capacity building, inter-country training, cross-border knowledge exchange, and promotes dialogue platforms in line with the Bandung Principles.
